Event requirements
Drivers Education: is designed to improve your driving skills and learn techniques at speed. Track experience is necessary for this event and skills learned will make you a better driver. The full track is 4.5 miles long, with 24 turns and is an absolute blast to drive. MMP is a terrific facility with all the amenities, with paved parking, gas pumps and real bathrooms.
You do not have to be a PCA member to participate and we expect a number of BMWs, Audis and other marques on the track. For this event, you must have prior track experience, as there is only one Driver Education run group, and no beginner group. If you do not have prior experience on both East and West tracks or the full track at Miller, or are not an experienced driver , please contact Otto Silva. There are also safety requirements for you and your car. These include an M 2000 or Snell SA 2000 or newer rated helmet, and closed toe shoes. Shorts and short sleeved shirts will be acceptable for this event. NO convertibles without rollover protection. Boxsters and 996 Porsche Cabriolets have Factory Roll Over protection, and will run with the top up. Earlier model Porsche Convertibles will need Roll Bars or Cages installed. All vehicles must run with the tops in place, no open top cars allowed. (This means T-tops, Convertible tops, Targa tops, whatever, must be in place and up!) Please
indicate your level of experience on the registration form. There will be limited instructors available on Friday, but there will be no rookie or beginner run group .
Shared Cars – because there is only one DE run group, if you want to share a car with another DE driver it will be necessary to alternate days or sessions with your co-driver. If you are sharing a car, please contact our DE Chair Otto Silva before registering so we can best meet your needs. His contact info is otto@databaseguru.net
The "Tentative" schedule can be seen at http://int.pca.org/docs/pdf/irpca_sep_de_sched.pdf
You must have had your car Teched within the last 30 days prior to this event (annual tech forms are no longer accepted). You can have your car teched at any certified mechanic locations such as Air Power Racing, Hillside Tire, local Porsche dealers, and other specialty shops such as Concourse Auto, Motorsport in SLC, Kapp's European in Orem, RSR Motorsports in Layton, etc. It is up to the discretion of the shop as to whether they charge for tech inspections. PCA National requires us to a "Top Tech" at the track so please be on time or you will miss your 1st session.
Driver's Education Information
We look forward to having an extremely fun and safe event. We intend to follow PCA and Intermountain Region PCA guidelines during this event.
The Driver's Education portion of the weekend is based on a non-competitive format. We will not keep track of lap times for anyone and there is no racing during these sessions.
Required equipment:
A car that can pass a cursory tech inspection. Fill out the Tech Guidelines included in your packet and turn it in at the registration table. You are responsible to make sure that your car is safe for high-speed use. If you have any concerns, request Tech help.
Closed toe shoes. Socks are required.
Helmets rated M or Snell SA 2000 or newer.
Stock seatbelts are OK but racing belts are encouraged as are roll bars, roll cages and Racing seats etc. 5 and 6 point harnesses can only be used with properly installed race seats and must be properly attached to a roll cage, roll hoop or a triangular truss system that uses the "B" pillars; such as, the Brey-Krause harness truss.
. If you desire any instruction, the passenger seat and restraints must be equivalent to the driver’s side.
Brake lights must work, steering must not be loose, brakes should feel firm, suspension and wheel bearings should be checked for tightness.
The car's contents must be cleared out prior to entering onto the track. Batteries must be secured.
Numbers on both sides of the car must be a contrasting color to car body and be at least eight inches tall. Taller numbers are recommended at this track.
No Convertibles without Roll Over protection. Porsche Boxsters and 996 Cabriolets have Factory Roll over protection. Earlier cars must add a Roll Bar or Roll Cage.
At any time, if you feel you need instruction, ask for an instructor. This track can be tricky and has several high-speed turns.
No passengers are allowed except for approved instructors (with identification) and their students.
Be safe on the track and in the pits. The Number One objective of drivers on a track should be to be aware of other traffic. Number Two is to be aware of how your car responds to input.
There will be a “three spins and you're out” rule enforced for the event. If you have more than two spins during the day you will be asked to leave. Following each spin anywhere on or off the track, you will receive a black flag telling you to come into the pits safely to have a chat with the IRPCA member running that group. He will ask you to analyze what happened. If you don't know, you'll be asked to exit the track at that point. If you realize what happened, explain what you could do differently and you’ll be allowed back on the track. Your car will also be given a quick look over for damage.
You will receive a list of the flags and their meaning when you register at the track.
Learn what the flags mean. Pay attention to the flag explanation in the drivers meeting. Also make sure you understand where passing is allowed. Passing at the wrong place or without a signal will result in expulsion.
Pass only on the straights and never in corners. Do not pass without being signaled by the driver that you are going to pass. Slower drivers should indicate your knowledge of cars about to pass you by pointing them past. You will not make friends by holding people up who are faster than you are. Have fun and learn to drive well.
