About this event

Audi Club Northwest is excited to host the Maryhill Loops Road Tour and Wine Tasting on Saturday, September 13, 2014.

The Maryhill Loops Road, owned by the Maryhill Museum of Art, was the first macadam asphalt paved road in the Pacific Northwest. In 2.8 miles the road ascends 850 feet via a series of 25 curves, 8 of which are hairpins. Generally the road is open to pedestrians and bicyclists only, but on Saturday, September 13th, Audi Club Northwest has private use of this road for a tour. In addition to Saturday's tour and wine tasting activities, an optional group drive from the Puget Sound area to Goldendale on Friday, and a group dinner in Goldendale on Friday night, have been planned. You may indicate your participation in any portion(s) of this event on the registration page.

On Friday September 12th, those in the Seattle area who are interested can meet up and caravan over to Goldendale, WA together. The Seattle caravan will leave Friday morning and our route offers some beautiful scenery as well as some fun on curvy roads. A no-host group dinner has been arranged at 7:00 pm Friday night at Ayutla Mexican Restaurant next door to the event hotel in Goldendale.

On Saturday September 13th, we will tour the Maryhill Loops Road during the day beginning with a driver's meeting at 8:30 am. In order to make this event enjoyable for everyone, the number of drivers on the Maryhill Loops Road is limited and this event will sell out quickly so sign up early! We will waitlist those who register after the event is full in case we have any cancellations (we have let people into the event off of the waitlist in years past). The drive on the Maryhill Loops Road is a tour so no helmets are required (or allowed), convertibles are allowed, and passengers are allowed and encouraged to come along for the fun! On Saturday evening we will head up the road to The Glass Onion restaurant in Goldendale for a wine tasting featuring wines from local Gorge area wineries and a catered dinner from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. The dinner will include appetizers (assorted cheeses, house made focaccia, pickled vegetables), salad (romaine, white oak micro greens, purple cabbage, toasted pumpkin seeds, sherry vinaigrette), entree (your choice of fish, lamb or vegetarian gnocchi) and dessert (burgundy poached Comice pear with creme fraiche). This is an ideal way to relax and visit after a good day of fun driving!

The fees for these activities are (per person):

  • $120 for the Maryhill Loops Road Tour, lunch, wine tasting and catered dinner
  • $80 for the Maryhill Loops Road Tour and lunch only
  • $55 for the wine tasting and catered dinner    only

Family and friends are welcome to come along and you can purchase lunch and/or the wine tasting and dinner for your guests for an additional fee even if they are not going to drive the loops road.

Each person who wants to drive on the Maryhill Loops Road on Saturday must complete their own registration. Drivers will be divided into two groups that will alternate driving on the loops road. If you are sharing a car, you and the other registered driver will be assigned to different groups so that you may each have the opportunity to drive the maximum number of times on the loops road.

Audi Club North America (ACNA) membership is required for this event.  Drivers who are not yet members, or who need to renew an existing membership, may handle that using the Audi Club North America website (http://www.audiclubna.org/membership).

Our hotel for this event is the Quality Inn in Goldendale, WA (http://www.qualityinn.com/hotel-goldendale-washington-WA178), about 8 miles north of Maryhill Loops Road. We have a block of rooms reserved at a group discount rate. A room with one Queen bed or a room with two Queen beds is $99. Reserve your room directly with the hotel at 509-773-5881 by September 9th and indicate you are with Audi Club Northwest to get our group rate. After September 9th our rooms will be released and the discount will no longer be available.

Note: When meals are a part of our events, ACNW will attempt to accommodate special dietary requirements if requested. However, meals are provided by third parties and circumstances may not always enable ACNW or its vendors to meet every special dietary need.

Those that have attended the Maryhill Loops Road Tour in the past know that Bruce Fields was an annual attendee of this event, and that he loved to sit at the top of the hill under "Bruce's Tree" and watch the cars drive up the road. Sadly, Bruce passed away last October so this will be our first Maryhill event without his presence and he will be greatly missed. In memory and in honor of Bruce and what he meant to our Audi Club Northwest community, a memorial bench is being installed under "Bruce's Tree" at the top of the hill. We will hold our Saturday morning driver's meeting there and will unveil the bench and kick off the day in Bruce's memory. If Bruce was important to you and you would like to make a contribution towards this effort, there is an opportunity for you to make an optional monetary donation towards Bruce's memorial bench on the registration page.

If you have any questions about this event please contact the Event Master Carrie Stewart at stewart.carrie@comcast.net or 206-930-2262.

Event requirements

Everyone must sign the Waiver when coming into the Maryhill Loops Road staging area, and also if participating in the caravan on Friday. This requirement includes drivers and guests; it makes you part of the club's insurance coverage. Parents must also sign a Minor Waiver on behalf of anyone under age 18. No exceptions.

Everyone driving on Maryhill Loops Road is required to have a fire extinguisher in their car. In the event that a car goes off the road, you must have immediate access to a fire extinguisher to handle a brush fire. Fire extinguishers must be ABC rated and fully charged. Please let us know if you can bring your own, or ACNW has a few fire extinguishers for loan, but it will be up to you to secure it in your car . There are a few options for securing your fire extinguisher in your car. If you have a cargo net you can secure your fire extinguisher under the cargo net in your trunk. If you don't have a cargo net, you can lay the fire extinguisher on your back seat, fasten the seat belt, and secure your fire extinguisher to the lap belt with a velcro strap or bungee cord. ACNW will have some bungee cords on hand for those that need to do this.

Payment in full must be made by a pre-enrolled driver before registration closes, otherwise your registration will be cancelled to allow another participant into that space.

Please contact the Event Master, Carrie Stewart, at stewart.carrie@comcast.net prior to the event with any questions about the event or about your registration.
